Biography

James Nisbet was born on 13th September 1836 in Greenyards, St. Ninian's, Stirlingshire. [1] In 1841 James Nisbet (age 4) was living with his family in Plean Muir, St Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland.[2] By the age of 14, James Nisbet, unmarried son, was working as a coal miner, residing in household of Richard Nisbet (35) in Auchenbowie, St Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland.[3]

Later he went to England to work as a farm labourer, at Bowdon in Cheshire. He returned to Scotland to marry Jane Bryce, on 25th October 1860, at East Borland, Denny, Stirlingshire.[4] After getting married he continued to work as a farm labourer and moved around various parts of England, living for short periods in Hale, Cheshire, then in Chatmoss, Lancashire, and then in Clapham, Bedfordshire. By 1866, he had moved to Home Farm at Hampton Lovett in Worcestershire, where he was a farm steward, meaning he looked after farms on the estates of large landowners In the 1871 Census of England, Wales & Scotland James Nisbet (age 34) was the head of household at House Farm, Hampton Lovett, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England[5] He is still there in 1881 (age 44), Farmer of 250 acres employing 1 labouer, was the married head of household at Home Farm, Hampton Lovett, Droitwich, Worcestershire, England.[6]

By 1891, he had moved to Town Farm at Weston, near Stevenage in Hertfordshire, where he was farm bailiff to Colonel Marlborough Pryor.[7] In around 1893, his son Richard took over this position, and James moved to Horninghold in Leicestershire. By this time James was prosperous enough to run his own farm, assisted by several of his children. In around 1900, he moved from Horninghold to the nearby village of East Norton where we find him in the 1901 Census. James Nisbet (age 64), Farmer, was the married head of household at Farm House, East & Norton, East Norton, Billesdon, Leicestershire, England.[8] He died on 1st October 1906, at the age of 70. He was buried in the churchyard at East Norton.[1]
