Biography

Benjamin was born 15 May 1798 and baptized 20 May North Berwick. [1] He is the son of John Nisbet and Janet Runciman.

He was at one time a wright in Musselburgh

In New Zealand as an artisan and carpenter, he worked on two of the earliest European buildings to survive from the new colony. The Stone House, for which he built the roof in 1832-36,

Stone Store Kerikeri is New Zealand’s oldest surviving stone building.

and Kemp House, for which he built additions in the early 1830s, are at Kerikeri, in the very north of the North Island.

These are now national monuments in the care of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. [2]

A PETITION having been presented under The Presumption of life Limitation Scotland Act 1881, to the Sheriff of the Lothians at the instance of John Nisbet, eldest son of the late James Nisbet, innkeeper, Haddington, who was the immediate younger brother of Benjamin Nisbet formerly Wright in Musselburgh, thereafter in New Zealand, son of John Nisbet late tidewaiter at Fisherrow for authority to make up a TITLE to property in Aberlady, in the County of Haddington, in the said Petitioner’s name, as heir at law of the said Benjamin Nisbet the Sheriff substitute at Haddington a notice that they intend to oppose the prayer of the petition being granted, FERME, FERME, & WILLIAMSON, Solicitors, Haddington Scotland Petitioners Agents, [3]
