Biography

John was baptized 02 Nov 1712 at Eyemouth, [1] son of David Nisbet and Alison Young. He passed away in 1796.

He did not marry.

John Nisbet was a local smuggler and merchant in the 1750s, He built Gunsgreen House described in the eighteenth century as a ""splendid palace built by a smuggler. The house had vaulted cellars where he kept his goods, both honestly traded and otherwise! The house includes a hidden Tea Chute, a unique survivor of the days when tea smuggling could make fortunes.

WILL OF JOHN NISBET At Edinburgh the Ninth day of October Seventeen Hundred and Ninety Four In Presence of the Lords of Council and Session Compeared Mr Charles Day Advocate and Procurator for John Nisbet Esquire after designed and gave the Trust Right and Disposition under written advising the said might. be registered in their Lordships’ Books. Conform to Law which Desire the said Lords found was noble and Ordained be sound to be done accordingly whereof the tenor follows: I John Nisbet Esqr. of Gunsgreen in the County of Berwick presently residing in Tweedmouth being resolved while I am sound in mind and judgement to settle my affairs in order to prevent all disputes which might otherwise arise after my decease relative to the Sucession and Division of my __ and and Effects, Do by these presents Give, Grant, Assign and Dispone from me my heirs and all others my Assigns to and in favour of John Constable, attorney at law in the town of Berwick upon Tweed, George Johnston, Writer to the Signet and John Nisbet (probably John Nisbet (-1808)) presently farmer at Ancroft in the County of Durham or to such of them as may accept and the Survivors or Survivor of them and to such other person or persons as may be Assigned by them in ___ hereafter mentioned any two of them to be a quorumas Trustees for me to that Effect underwritten all and sundry Lands, Heritages and Debts, Sums of Money whatsoever heritable or moveable belonging to me or addebted, resting or owing by whatever person or persons to me at the time of my Decease By Bond heritable or moveable Bill and ticket(?) accompt ……… accompt Book part is in promise or any other amount of __ like and all other moveable goods, gear, corns, cattle, horses, nolt sheep, household plenishing Bank Notes lying ___ Gold Silver coin and __ and all other Moveables that shall pertain and belong to me at the time of my Death with the whole grounds and instructions thereof and Bonds Bills and other Securities taken for payment of the Bond and particularly without prejudice to the foresaid Generality all and Whole the moiety or such other share or shares as do or may belong to me of the Executry Estate and Effects of the deceased Colonel Alexander Dow which Estate and Effects I formerly disponed to the said George Johnston as trustee upon my Sequestrated Estate Conform to two several dispositions and assignations in his favour the first one dated the twenty first day of November Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Seven years and Recorded in the Register of adjudications on the twenty eight day of said month and the other dated __ and recorded the seventeenth day of April Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Nine Years and Conform to Disposition and Assignation in the English Form of the said Funds Dated the twenty sixth day of July Seventeen Hundred and Eighty Eight Years of whatever other date the same maybe with all Right Titles or interest which Share __ or to the residue that shall remain due to me after payment of all expences as also the residue which may remain to me of my funds which have been Sequestrated by the authority of the Court of Session as before mentioned Dispensing with the __ of this Conveyance and declaring the same to be as Valid and Official to all intents and purposes as if every Article of my said means Estate and effects of whatsoever kind were held in ___ ___ ___ with full power to the said John Constable George Johnston and John Nisbet or to such of them as may accept and the Survivors or Survivor of them whom thereby put in my full Right and place of the promises immediately upon my death to intromit with uplift and dispose upon the several debts Sums Dispose upon the several Debts Sums of Money and other subjects generally above assigned and Disponed and if needful to raise and pursue therefore according to Law Decreets [2]
