OBITUARY

MR CHARLES NISBET. The death took place, at Rawene Hospital during the week end, of Charles Nisbet, a man. who for many years took a prominent part in northern affairs. His earlier life was spent in bush contracting and farming until 1904, when he accepted a position as head of the Forestry Department for the Kauri Timber Company. Deceased then lived in Auckland, until he retired from, this position about the year 1922, when he returned to the north, where he continued farming operations. He was one of the first members of the Highways Board, a position which he had to relinquish, on account of blindness. Mr Nisbet was a member of the Bay of Islands County Council for many years, and a director of the Auckland Farmers' Union. Deceased, who was 72 years of age, leaves a widow and a family of several sons and daughters. The funeral took place at Kaikohe cemetery today.[1]

OBITUARY. MR. CHARLES NISBET. Mr. Charles Nisbet, of Heme Bay, Auckland, who died in the Rawene Hospital last Sunday morning, was 63 years of age. He was born at Kaeo, and from his earliest youth had been connected with the timber trade. For many years, in conjunction with his brother, Mr. Albert Nisbet, he was bush contracting in the Northern Wairoa and Whangaroa districts, and in 1907 he entered the service of the Kauri Timber Company, as outside manager, having control of the company's operating bushes. In 1917, owing to failing health, he retired from active work, but his long experience and sound judgment were frequently drawn upon in connection with difficult bush problems. For many years, in addition to his occupations in the timber industry, be maintained an interest in farming pursuits. He took a prominent part in local body affairs, and was a member of the Whangaroa County Council for ten years, resigning from that body when he took up his residence in Auckland. Later, he served for six years as the representative of the Kaikohe Riding on the Bay of Islands Countv Council and on the Bay of Islands Hospital Board. When the Main Highways Act was brought into force he was appointed a member of the No. 1 Highways District Council. These public positions he found it necessary to relinquish owing to failing eyesight that resulted in total blindness. He took a prominent part in founding the freezing works at Moerewa, and at the time of his death was a director of the Auckland Farmers Freezing Company. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Zealandia. The late Mr. Nisbet married a daughter of Mr. J. D. Hayes, of Kaeo, and is survived by his wife and three sons. The funeral took place at Kaikohe on Monday. [2]
