Biography

Thomas Nisbet was the son of Philip Nisbet and Elizabeth Haldane.

Thomas Nisbet of Ladykirk (son of Sir Philip Nisbet and Elizabeth Haldane) married Agnes Purves

Early in the seventeenth century Mr Thomas Nisbet, a brother of the Laird of West Nisbet, appears to have been the owner of the lands of Ladykirk, as his widow in 1650 is designed “‘ Agnes Purves of Ladiekirk.”’ 1653, December |, Discharge by Isobell Armstrang, widow of John Bell, maltman in Duns, with consent of William Bell, her eldest lawful son, to Agnes Purves, widow of Mr Thomas Nisbet, brother of the Laird of West Nisbet, for the Martinmas interest of the sum of 500 merks borrowed by her from the said John Bell; dated at Duns, witnesses, John Cokburne, wright there, and David Simsone there.

They had two sons, Mr Philip and David, the latter becoming a merchant in Edinburgh and marrying Agnes Home. The elder son succeeded to Ladykirk, and in 1646 married Catherine Sinclair, a daughter of David Sinclair in Lambden by Margaret Ker, and, dying in the beginning of the year 1684, left an only son, Mr James Nisbet of Ladykirk. He married in 1680 Mary, a younger daughter of Colonel Patrick Hay of Arbroath, and died not many weeks after his father, leaving an only child, his daughter, Margaret Nisbet, as his heir. She married in 1699 John Veitch of Dawick, and had by him four children, two sons and two daughters, and the elder daughter, Anna Veitch, married in 1725 James Burnett of Barns, who eventually had to deal with the lands as the assignee of his mother-in-law.[1]

He passed away before 1646 as his son Thomas Nisbett was called "son to late Mr Thomas Nisbett at LADIE KIRK parish in Berwick" .

Contract of Marriage, dated at Belchester, 28th November 1674, between Sir Harry Home of Heirdrig, knight, and Katherine Nisbet, Lady Belchester, with consent of Mr. Philip Nisbet in Ladiekirk, her brother german. He is to infeft his future spouse in an annuity of 500 merks secured over his lands of Heirdrig, and she conveys to him the whole stock and plenishing of the lands of Belchester of which she is at present m natural possession, under the burden of payment to James Dickson of Belchester, her son, of 1,600 merks, or making over to him so much of the said stock and plenishing as will equal that amount, or selling the whole to the said James and his curators for this sum. She stipulates that if her said son should die and his property thereby accrue to her, she shall be free to hold it in her own right. The witnesses are, Mr. James Daes of Coldin knowis, advocate, Mr. George Dickson of Bughtrig, advocate, and Mr. James Nisbet, son to the said Mr. Philip.
