Biography

Archibald Nisbit was born 12 Mar 1746 and baptized Bothwell Parish Lanark 20 Mar 1746 lawful son of Archibald Nisbet of Carfin Esq. and Emilia Proven[1][2] Archibald son of Archibald Nisbet Emilie Proven [3] He was served heir to his father in 1786 , and he died in Edinburgh 20 Oct 1807 [4] and buried 24 Oct 1807.

He married at Edinburgh 17 May 1776 Grizel or Grace, daughter of Daniel Carmichael of Mauldslie [5] Nisbet, Archibald, younger, of Carfin, lieutenant in 51st regiment, now in Edinburgh, and Miss Grizell, now in Tolbooth p., d. to deceased Daniell Carmichaell of Mauldsly, Lanarkshire, married by the Rev. Dr. M'Queen 12 May 1776[6] in Carluke:parish; Lanarkshire, and sister of the 5th and 6th Earls of Hyndford. She died at Carfin 4 Jan 1823 as a widow.[7]

  • Archibald baptized 1 Mar 1777 Carmichael Lanark[9] Archibald Nisbet V. of Carfin, matriculated at Glasgow University 1791, became a writer in Edinburgh; succeeded to Mauldslie in 1817 on the death -of his uncle Andrew, 6th and 'last Earl of Hyndford; [10] He died unmarried at 9 South Grey Street, Newington, Edinburgh, 19 February 1844. [11]
  • Jean Vigor Nisbet baptized 12 Oct 1789 at Carluke[12] [13]. Jane Vigor, married at Mauldslie Castle 10 February 1812 to Thomas Gordon of Harperfield 14 in Lesmahagow parish, Lieut.-Col. Lanarkshire Militia; succeeded on her uncle's death to the collection of paintings, gems and curios made by the 3rd Earl of Hyndford. Col. Gordon died at Harperfield.16 May 1832, aged 80. [14] She died at her brother's house in Edinburgh 4 May 1835. [15] They had issue two sons [16] and four daughters. The sons and a surviving daughter succeeded jointly under their uncle's will to Carfin and Mauldslie. [17] They sold Carfin to Stephen Anderson of Clydevale in May 1845, and sold Mauldslie to William Dixon of Govan in 1846.

He bought 12 Nov 1788 the property of Holmhead on the south bank of the Clyde three miles below, Lanark, from Samuel Chapman and renamed it Carfin,[22] Inherited by his sisters children who sold it in May 1845 to Stephen Anderson Clydesdale
