Elizabeth Niven was born the 1st of January, 1812, in York County, South Carolina. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Niven and Priscilla Lindsay.
Elizabeth married sometime before 1834, Joseph P. Bennett, possibly in York county, South Carolina. No marriage record has been located.
Elizabeth and Joseph P. Bennett were living in Alabama by 1838, settling on land adjoining her brother Jesse Britton Niven, in Benton County (now Calhoun County) Alabama.
Elizabeth and Joseph P. Bennett were living in St. Clair County, Alabama in 1850.[1]
Elizabeth is left bequest in the 1850 will of her father, John Niven. Elizabeth's husband Joseph P. Bennett is also named in the will. The will reads in part as follows: ". . . I also loan to my daughter Elizabeth Bennett one negro girl named Mary, which she now has in possession to her, her lifetime and at her death said negro and her increase to go to her children. I will the amount of a note due from Jesse Niven dec. of the State of Alabama to me for which I hold a receipt of Joseph P. Bennett, in the event of said Bennett making no return to me of the amount of said note. I allow the said amount to be deducted from the share of my estate falling due to said Bennetts children born of my said daughter Elizabeth . . ."[2]
Elizabeth, age 48, appears as head of household in the 1860 Federal census in Caldwell Parish, Louisiana. Elizabeth's household appeared as follows: Elizabeth, age 48, occupation, farming; Thomas H. age 18, occupation, farming; Richard J. age 11; Margaret P. age 10; and Mary C. age 8.[3]
Elizabeth age 60, and widowed was living in the household of Margaret Tharp in the 1880 Federal Census in Richland Parish, Louisiana.[4]
Elizabeth died sometime after the 1880 Federal Census and before the 1900 Federal Census, in Richland Parish, Louisiana.
There are a number of variations to the spelling of the Niven name found in the records. Examples of some variations are: Nivens; Nivin; and Neven. For consistency in the various generations, the name has been spelled "Niven".
