Biography

Charles Nix is born in Azeby, Lincolnshire, England in 1846. He is baptised in St Michael church in the village of Heydour on May 26, 1846 [1]. His parents are George Nix (1823-1891) and Elizabeth Smalley (1821-1909).

Azeby is a small hamlet close to several other hamlets all lying near the village of Heydour (often spelt “Haydor”) where the church is located. And Azeby is variously spelt as “Aseby,” or “Aisby.” The modern spelling is Aisby and it is 12 kilometres southwest of Sleaford.

In the 1851 census records, Charles is living in Heydour Parish (presumably in the hamlet of Aisby) with his parents and two siblings [2]. His father is an agricultural labourer.

Charles marries Elizabeth Hutson (1850-1910) in 1868 in Lincoln [3][4]. Lincoln is 40 kilometres by road north of Aisby. Elizabeth was born in 1850 in the village of Hardwick which is just northwest of the town of Lincoln. Charles and Elizabeth have four children:

• Mary Elizabeth Nix 1869-1911 + (1888) Harry Brown Brinkler 1863-1946

• George Andrew Nix 1871-1937 + (1894) Susannah Hall 1871-?

• Emily Nix 1874-1914 + (1902) Albert Murdock Woolley 1879-1950

• Thomas Turner Nix 1875-1939 + (1897) Clara Branch 1874-1943

Charles and Elizabeth are shown in the 1871 census records to be living in Flamstead, Hertfordshire [5]. Flamstead is just to the north of the city of London. Charles’ occupation is an agricultural labourer. The couple have a one-year-old daughter, Mary E., and a son, George A., who has not yet reached his first birthday.

In 1881 they are living in Islington, Middlesex [6]. Today this is a part of the city of London. Charles’ occupation is a “dairyman.” They now have four children: Mary E. Nix (11) born in Flamsted; George A Nix (10) also born in Flamsted; Emily Nix (7) born in London; and Thomas L. Nix (5), born in London. (The middle initial of the fourth child is actually “T.”) There are also two servants and a cousin living with the family – a 22-year old Thomas Smalley.

In 1891 they are living on Turnpike Lane in Hornsey, Middlesex, and this, too, is now a district in north London (about six kilometres north of Islington) [7]. Charles is still a dairyman. There are only three children still living at home: George A (20), Emily (17) and Thomas T (15). In addition, there is one servant – a 20-year-old Emily – and one niece – a 7-year-old Alice M. Pickworth – living with the family. And there is a boarder in the house. Charles is now 45 years old and the fact that the family in both the 1881 and 1891 census records has servants suggests that he is doing well with his business.

In 1901 they are living in Hendon, Middlesex -- again a district in North London about 10 kilometres west of Hornsey [8]. Charles’ occupation is now shown as a “carman & farmer.” Only one child is living with them – the 27-year-old Emily who is a “poultry breeder.” A 22-year old niece -- Anna Ackworth -- is living in the household and her occupation is shown as “assistant housework.”

Elizabeth dies in 1910 in Edmonton, Middlesex. Edmonton is about 8 kilometres northwest of Hornsey where Charles is found in the 1911 census records. In the 1911 census records Charles is now 65-years old [9]. He is living by himself in Hornsey and his occupation is still a dairyman. He is shown in the census record as a widower. Charles dies in 1919 at the age of 74 in Edmonton [10].

His wife is Elizabeth (29) and they have 3 sons: Andrew (5), Charles (4) & John (2).

[3] Elizabeth, wife of Charles. Initially there were difficulties in identifying the wife of Charles. However: (1) it is known from census records that the name of Charles’s wife is Elizabeth and that she was born in Hardwick, Lincolnshire; (2) a search for a marriage record for a Charles Nix turns up one possibility (see note [4]) but all this record shows is that someone by the name of Charles Nix got married in the spring of 1868 in Lincoln and that one of the possible people he married is an Elizabeth Hutson; (3) a further search turns up an 1851 census record for a family – Thomas & Mary Hutson – living in Lissington, Lincolnshire. Lissington is about 20+ kilometres northeast of Lincoln. Thomas & Mary have a 1-year daughter named Elizabeth who was born in Hardwick. Hardwick is about 33+ kilometres west of Lissington; and (4) from the census records it is known that Elizabeth (the wife of Charles) was born in c1850 in Hardwick (see 1881 census). So all of this fits: Charles Nix married Elizabeth Hutson in 1868 in Lincoln.
