Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that he was son of Thomas Noble and Rachel Gardner, baptized 20 January 1632 in Somerset, England. Thank you.
NOTE: Please note additional sources with regard to Thomas Noble and Rachel Gardner.

Thos. resided Springfield at time of marr.; moved to Westfield 1669. Came to Boston 1653; removed to Springfield same year. At Westfield, was constable 1674; Joined W'field Church 29 Feb 1681; freeman 12 Oct 1681; county surveyor 1696. In Boltwood's History of the Noble family, it is stated Rev. Emerson Davis wrote that Noble lived about 2 1/2 miles from the present center of Westfield on land where his son, Deacon Thomas, later resided & which remained in the family until 1791 when great-grandson Lt. Stephen died. At that time, property passed to Ambrose Day [ Lockwood, in Westfield & its Historic Influences said this was the location (n 1922 when his book was written) of the State Sanatorium]. Thomas & family moved into town during King Philip's War, as they were harrassed by the Waranoake sachem Gray Lock who "said he had several opportunities of killing most of his children at a shot, but did not want scalps as much as captives." He appears to have been a close associate of Rev.Edward Taylor, as together they signed a colonial record regarding a land controversy in 1679 (Lockwood, p.189-191) and Taylor witnessed signing of Thomas's will.

Hi, Noble-1146 is the father of Noble-336. Can he be added to the profile? (They're my 9th- and 10-th gr-grandfathers, I'm pulling this from family records.) Thanks.

DOB (17 Jun 1632) quoted on findagrave matches the age in years, months, and days quoted from inscription.

I restored the unsourced baptism info to the Disputed Origins section of the text. Please do not give it any credence. There is a propensity for us family historians to grasp at straws in the records -- a child baptized somewhere in England at roughly the right time with a name similar to our immigrant ancestor surely must be our ancestor. Never mind that there are few unique first-last name combinations, and there are many people of that era for whom there are no surviving records, we latch onto a record. In the absence of evidence of the immigrant's origin (such as a court deposition giving a place of birth, or a will or letters naming family members), this is just wishful thinking.

This is one of my great grandfathers. I feel it might have been wise to leave material such as Baptismal information available in some manner to family members who might have had a chance to review and research this information. It closes the door for family who are seeking their family lines. Just a thought to admins... https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Noble-336&person2_name=Rogan-205

I concur. I reviewed NEHGS published journals for the origins without success. The 1878 Noble genealogy does not name them. I've detached them. I'll ask the Massachusetts history project to protect the profile.

I don't see a source for Thomas's parents other than a genealogy from family search which is also unsourced. I might be missing something but I'm not confident that these are his parents.
Noble-2369 and Noble-336 appear to represent the same person because: Given dates and place of death, these are the same man. Please merge. Thanks.
