James was born in Ireland and emigrated to NZ as a 25 year old single man with his parents and siblings in 1878. He sailed on the ship "Timaru", departing Glasgow on 8 Aug 1878 and arriving at Dunedin, Otago on 6 Nov of that year.
According to his death notice in the Southland Times James was the son of James and Eliza Noble of Otautau, Southland, NZ. He died in Dunedin on !0 Dec 1927 and was buried on the 13th Dec at eastern cemetery , Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.
It seems James never married and had no children.
