Biography

Archibald Noble was born 1803 in County Fermanagh, Ireland; he died Dec. 2, 1875 aged 72 years in Manvers Township. According to the death certificate, he had been sick for about one year and was 70 years of age. His physician was Dr. C. H. Brereton, and his wife, Jane Noble, registered his death on September 23, 1876.

On April 18, 1838 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Cobourg, Ontario, Archibald married Jane Grandy , the daughter of William Grandy and Anne Finlay of Manvers Township. Archibald and Jane are buried in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lifford, Manvers Anglican Church, Lifford, Ontario.

Archibald and Jane lived in Manvers Township on Concession XI Lot 22 and the North ½ Lot 23. In 1857 Archibald purchased Lot 22 Con 11 from H. H. Meredith of Port Hope. It was 200 acres in size and cost him £300. Repayment was to be: £75 plus interest on the first day of March 1858, and £75 plus interest on the first of March in each subsequent year until the original amount was repaid (Instrument #819: Mortgage—dated Nov. 13, 1857, Registered No. 16, 1857, in Lindsay, Ontario Land Registry Office). In 1858 the Nobles purchased the north half of Lot 23 Con 11 from George Daintry who held the mortgage of £150 (Instrument #919: Mortgage dated Dec. 6, 1858, Registered Dec. 18, 1858, located in the Land Registry Office in Lindsay, Ontario).

Jane and Archibald were located just down the Fleetwood Road from the town of Franklin, Ontario. They had nine surviving children:

1. Barbara Noble born April 20, 1839, baptized by Rev. Samuel Armour on April 23, 1839, Manvers Twsp. Barbara never married. She died in Peterborough September 6, 1915 of paralysis (6 months) and heart failure.

2. Anne Eliza was born around 1841 in Upper Canada. She was deceased prior to February 23, 1875.

3. Mary Jane Noble born June 20, 1843, baptized by Rev. Samuel Armour on October 1, 1843, Manvers Twsp. Mary Jane married Charles Wesley Jones (son of William and Sarah Jones of Emily Township) on March 10, 1870 in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lifford, Manvers Anglican Church, Lifford, Ontario. (Province of Ontario Archives, Book 8, Page 124, Northumberland County) The marriage was performed by T. Horace Musson, P.A. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lifford, Manvers Anglican Church, Manvers Township, Northumberland County. Both Mary Jane Noble and Charles Wesley Jones were residents of Manvers Township, Ontario and were members of the Church of England. Witnesses were James Lytle and Margaret V. Noble. Mary Jane and Wes Jones established their residence in the town of Franklin, Ontario just down the road from Mary Jane’s parents’ homestead. She died August 1, 1918 in Tilston, Manitoba at 6:00 A.M. of pneumonia with Dr. Clarke as attending physician. Secondary cause of death was congestive heart failure (otherwise known then as dropsy). Buried August 5, 1918 by Rev. A. T. Weir in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lifford, Manvers Anglican Church Cemetery, Lifford, Ontario.

4. James Noble born April 20, 1845, baptized by Rev. Robert Harding on May 18, 1845, Manvers Twsp. ?A Daughter born Feb. 15, 1867 according to the Peterborough Review of Feb. 19, 1867.

5. William Noble born Oct. 16, 1846 in Manvers, baptized by Rev. Robert Harding on Dec. 27, 1846.

6. Archibald Noble born June 3, 1849 in Manvers Twp.; died July 3, 1921 of pernicious anaemia at 215 Dublin Street, Peterborough, Ontario. The informant was his sister, Margaret Pollard of Dublin Street. According to the death certificate, Archie was buried July 5, 1921. According to the Anglican Church records, burial took place on July 4, 1921; the service was conducted by Rev. A. T. Weir and he was buried beside his father in the St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Lifford, Manvers Anglican Church Cemetery in Lifford, Ont. At that time, Archie was listed as single and a retired farmer from Franklin, Ont. Archibald’s wife, Caroline, died December 29, 1885 at 32 years of age (i.e., born about 1851); she was sick with inflammation of the lungs for about six days. According to the 1881 Manvers, Durham East census, Caroline was born c. 1853 in Ontario and of Irish descent. a. William Noble died June 17, 1882 at six weeks of age of Erysipelas (strep skin infection).

7. Margaret Victoria Noble Her married surname was “Pollard.”

8. Isaac Noble was born about 1853.

9. Rachel Noble was born about 1855.

Archibald Noble and Jane Grandy had a homestead near Franklin. The two story brick house is still standing on the Fleetwood road.
