Biography
Leland was born in 1814 on Painfield Plantation in Essex, Virginia. He and his brother Edmund came to Mississippi in 1835 to develop 1200 cares of land their father Edmund Noel bought for them in Franklin, Mississippi. William Noel, another brother joined them later. [1] Leland married Elizabeth Burrell in Madison, Alabama 29 Sep 1845[2] . She died a year later in 1846. Later the brothers each bought land in Holmes County. Leland married Margaret Sanders in 1851. They had 12 children: Thomas, Susan Elizabeth, Benjamin, Edmund, Mary, [3]
Henry, Fanny, James, Louis, Susan, Annie. [4] According to Wikipedia, the three became major planters and slaveholders in the area. According to the 1860 Slave Schedules of the US Census, the three held 130 slaves in total that year;[5] and [6] Leland held the most. They cultivated extensive cotton plantations in Holmes County. Leland died in early 1896 before his will was probated on 23 March 1896.[7]
