Biography

Peter Noland lived in Appalachia, in North Carolina.

Peter, son of Henry Noland and Isabel Milner,[1] was born about 1786 in North Carolina.[2]

Peter is believed to have married Frances Bryant.[1] The 1850 census includes 63-year-old "F. Noland" (the census notes that she cannot read or write).[2]

Research Notes

Two generations conflated? As of 24 October 2022, Peter's profile shows he lived to be over 100 years old (born 1786 and died 1897), with birth years on the profiles attached as children spanning 1806 to 1827.

Peter Noland died in 1897.[citation needed]

Profiles for two daughters named Nancy are attached as of 24 October 2022. One, Noland-448, married Matthew Russell, and the 1860 census shows a Matthew Russell and Nancy in the same household (see her profile). The other, Noland-440, married John Price.

From Milesian Mountaineers, page 141:[1]

"Peter and Frances Noland had at least seven known children; three daughters and four sons. Matilda Noland, Peter's eldest daughter, married Powers Rogers in 1837. Nancy Noland married John Price and Huldah Noland married Carson Clark. Both marriages occurred in 1854.[19]
[19] Allen, The Annals of Haywood County, page 380; also "Haywood County North Carolina Marriage Bonds".

Note that information from Haywood County marriage records on pages 301 and 302 of Milesian Mountaineers has "Huldy Noland married Carson Clark" on 28 August 1854 and "Nancy Noland married John Price" on 31 December 1856. The records include two Matilda Nolands, about a generation apart - "Matilda Noland married Nicholas P. Rogers" on 5 May 1835 and "Matilda Noland married Wilson Brown" on 26 May 1856.[1]

Son John: "J Noland" in the 1850 census is age 20 (and Peter is 64).[2] Peter and Frances, according to the 1850 census, were 64 and 63, respectively. Peter's entry was not marked to indicate that he could not read or write while Frances's was. The 1860 census that has John (27) head of household with Peter, age 70, and Frances, age 69, noting that neither Peter nor Frances notes that neither ages, the 70-year-old Peter cannot read or write. In 1850, he could (and can again in 1870).[2][3][4] Or maybe the 1860 census taker got confused on ages and abilities?

Children

The 1850 census uses initials and does not indicate relationships. The household of Peter Noland (64), includes the following people - all born in North Carolina (including Peter). J. Lynn Noland puts names to the initials and discusses relationships in Milesian Mountaineers, noting that his oldest sons - Lewis[5] and Willis - had already established their own households with large families of their own, quite near their father (as indicated by the 1850 census).[1] Matilda Noland, daughter of Peter, married Nicholas P. Rogers in 1837 (license issued 3 March).[6]
  • F Noland, F (63) - wife Francis Noland
  • B Noland, M (27) - son Robert Burton Noland
  • H Noland, F (21) - daughter Huldah Noland
  • J Noland, M (20) - son John Noland
  • Mary Fish (27)
  • James Allen (14)
  • Lucinda Millender (44) - probably daughter of Samuel and Patsy (Nolen) Millender, with Patsy his sister or cousin.[7] The maiden name of Peter's mother, Isabel, is given as Milner - or sometimes "Millender".

Fish Connection(s)

The Mary Fish (27) in Peter's 1860 household is possibly the same Mary Fish who is 15 in the 1850 household of Arba and Sarah Fish,[8] except that it is more likely that the Mary (22) in Arba's 1860 household[9] is the same Mary as was 15 in 1850, despite the age discrepancy.
"Arbin Fish" - in WikiTree, Arbin Fish (abt.1814-), born in Burke, North Carolina, is the husband of Sarah Noland (as of 25 October 2022). Sources on his profile include census records for Tennessee.
Trying to pin down the Mary Fish who is in Peter Noland's 1860 household, age 27, has found no strong contenders, but has led me to believe confirmation is needed that all children in the household are sons/daughters of the head of household in the 1850 and 1860 census records. While the death certificate for John L. Fish (born c1840, died 1914) would seem to indicate that his father Harbin Fish (per the certificate) was a different man than the Arba Fish of the census records, with wife Sarah/Sary. The profile for "Arbin" Fish (Fish-5890) has sources to support that he is the father of John L. Fish and also the husband of Sarah Noland. ~ Observations by Liz Shifflett, 25 October 2022
The parents of John L. Fish were - according to his 1914 death certificate, which gives his birth year as 1840 - Harbin Fish, born in McDowell County, and Harriett Elizabeth Noland, born in Haywood County.[10] However, J. Lynn Noland's Milesian Mountaineers has Harriett Elizabeth Noland, daughter of Lewis Noland as the wife of John L. Fish. Lewis, born 1820, is the older brother of Sarah.[11] Additional records for these folks would be helpful.

I was going to copy over what I had compiled from a new-to-me source (given in the FamilySearch PID for Pierce, d 1715). I went ahead and copied Pierce's bulleted sources also, as they might lead you to helpful info for you. Beware, however, since a lot of information found online is unsupported (hope the following displays correctly).
  • Colonial Settlers (online database), entry for Pierce Noland (accessed 29 Jan. 2019/link updated 2 November 2022)
  • Find a Grave memorial #42041929 for Pierce Noland II (1654-1724)
    • Find A Grave: Memorial #42031989 for Pierce Noland I (1632-1714)
    • note that the death dates are different than most family researchers show
  • FamilySearch PID for Pierce Noland (1654–20 January 1715)
    • FamilySearch Person: L2BN-TY4
    • FamilySearch Person Sources: L2BN-TY4 11 as of 2 November 2022
    • FamilySearch Person Discovery: L2BN-TY4
  • Haywood County Heritage, North Carolina, Vol. 1 (one of the sources listed in the PID, with a link to archive.org - found the full URL: https://archive.org/details/haywoodcountyher00hayw (accessed 2 November 2022), but my limited access expired before I could review the section about this Pierce (starting on page 94, introducing "The Noland Families of Haywood County"). The snippits seen in the search results indicate that the branch discussed - as the first Noland family to arrive in Haywood County - descends from this Pierce's son Philip (died 1733). I believe the WikiTree connections are correct (as of 2 November 2022) from this Pierce to Peter (died 1796), named as the grandfather of Peter Noland in the following quote:

"The first Noland family to arrive in Haywood Co. was that of Peter Noland, son of Henry Noland, and grandson of Peter Noland (d. 1796). He and his wife, Frances (Bryant) Noland, originally settled near 'Penland's Ford', now Canton....."

Their WikiTree profiles are Peter Noland (abt.1786-1897) and Frances (Bryant) Noland (abt.1787-).

The Philip Noland, mentioned on page 89 as marrying "the oldest daughter of William and Leanah, Mary (Polly) [McClure] (Oct. 10, 1822 - ca. 1906)" and being Haywood County's "sheriff at the beginning of the Civil War" is Phillip Noland (1826-1862).
