Research Notes

When this profile was created, as head of the Welman Noland line, it had no dates, no sources, and only Ireland as a location (for place of birth). It also had the following text (which is referred to in the comments):

When Perce Noland came to America from Ireland, he brought five of his six sons with him. One of them, Welman Noland is the ancestor of Stella Hellen Noland, Grandmother of the author.
author: Theresa Ellenwood

Estimated Date: Based on comments, perhaps born 1700: "Following this Pierce's line down to a profile with a date (1817), and then working back up, a guesstimate of birth for this Pierce, Welman Noland's father, is about 1700."

Lead?: The following was added as a source at one point, but may not be for this Pierce:

The question for this Pierce is which generation was he? The comment about 1660 /1700 birth years makes me think he was originally intende as a later generation than Noland-140 (born c1628 in Ireland), but whether as son, grandson, or nephew/grand-nephew is not known.

I thought I had added estimated birth years for Theresa's Welman Noland line but I don't see them now. I'll look into that later today or tomorrow.

I'm thinking that this profile had been born c1700? I think that would put him as a son of Pierce Noland-67 (son of Pierce Noland-140), who was born in Ireland around 1660 & came to Maryland by 1686. He had four sons and a daughter, according to my father's notes.

or... maybe 1700 was a century typo for 1600 (or Theresa didn't have the pre-1700 badge and therefore didn't enter a pre-1700 date?) In which case we're back to this Pierce probably intended to be the same as Noland-140, unless it was supposed to be for an earlier generation than Pierce born 1628?

Thanks Terri - I still think the 1660 / 1700 birth years are a bit far apart for these to be the same person. Also, the bio text says Pierce brought 5 of his 6 sons with him. the other Pierce (Noland-67) was one of 5 brothers who came to America, but his father didn't.

The reason I thought this Pierce might be the same one as Noland-67 was because -67 had a son named William. Considering the lack of spelling and pronunciation conventions at the time William could easily be interpreted as Wellman. I have a family that started out at Whitesides but partly because of how they pronounced it, the name ended up Whitsitt as it is today.
ah - and now I see why I'd included the extra information in my April post. This profile says that Pierce came from Ireland with five of his six sons - Welman being one of them.

My family's Pierce Noland born in Ireland around 1660 came to Maryland by 1686. He had four sons and a daughter, according to my father's notes. He had four brothers who also came to America - none named Welman.

Sharon Winsatt for WikiTree profile Noland-139, said that Pierce came to America with his five brothers. My family's notes have Pierce & 4 brothers, so maybe that was an edit error (perhaps originally "one of five brothers").

Re-reading my April post... I could have been clearer. I don't see that this Pierce and Pierce Noland can be the same person. Following this Pierce's line down to a profile with a date (1817), and then working back up, a guesstimate of birth for this Pierce, Welman Noland's father, is about 1700. The other Pierce - who has no Welman in his tree at all (and his family is a great one for repeating names) - was born about 40 years earlier. Cheers, Liz

Noland-67 and Noland-279 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person
born around 1700? (1730 birth year guess for Welman).

My family's Pierce Noland born in Ireland around 1660 came to Maryland by 1686. No Welmans in the tree at all.
