Research Notes
Birth Year: The Missouri death certificate for James W. Noland,[4] cited by his Find a Grave memorial, gives 27 March 1890[2] for his birth. The 1900 census for his parents' household lists him as 7, born March 1893.[1] His wife Lora was the informant for the information on his death certificate.[4]
Mother Emma: His father married twice. His first wife, Emma Belle Garner, died in Kentucky. After her death, John moved to Missouri, where he married the widow Emma (Brown) Alley.[5] John and his second wife had four children - James was the oldest. The 1900 census shows they had been married 8 years and lists James siblings and step-siblings.[1]
