Verlin Noland's World War I registration card,[4] dated 11 September 1918, lists him as 19 years old (born 20 August 1899) and describes him as medium height and build, with gray eyes and brown hair. His "present occupation" is given as a "bolter up" at the "Bethlehem Ship Corp., Harlen Plant" in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware and Haywood County, North Carolina as his permanent home address, the same as his "nearest relative", Will Noland (presumably his father).[5]
On 17 March 1921, Verlin Noland and Carrie Downs were married by W.C. Medford, JP, in Waynesville, NC. Witnesses were Florence Downs, S.N. Liner and J.G. Murray.[6]
The 1930 Census found them in Haywood County with several children and his parents in the household.

His father and mother were 21 and 17 when they married. He and Carry were 21 and 19. Both he and Carry can read and write. Neither of his parents could, according to the 1930 census,[7] although the 1900 census[2] and the 1920[3] census noted that Margrett could read and write.
The 1940 census shows additional children for Verlin and Carrie: Robert, born in 1939, and Medford, born in 1930. Still at home are Ray (18), Opal (16), and Van (13). The 1940 census also gives a more specific location - Lake Junaluska, Waynesville Township, Haywood County, North Carolina - described as "Enumeration District Number 44-24 Waynesville Township outside Hazelwood and Waynesville Towns NW of Southern Railway, Lake Junaluska (part)".[9]
Verlin passed away in 1988,[10] on 12 March 1988.[11] He and his wife Carrie are buried together in the Maple Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Waynesville, Haywood County[12] (he was a resident of Waynesville but died in Clyde, Haywood County).[13]
The 1950 Census shows Verlin (50) and Carrie (48) with their two youngest sons, Robert (19) and Medford (10).[14]
