Biography

Like many Irish people of his generation, Michael Noone is reputed to have been born on the Night of the Big Wind, 6 January 1839.[1]

However, he was reported to be only 56 in the 1901 census, 69 in the 1911 census and 77 when he died in 1919, implying that he was not born until some time between 1841 and 1845.[2] His father was Thomas Noon.[3]

Michael Noon [Noone] married Margaret Conlan on 2 May 1868 at Bohola Chapel in Swinford, Kiltimagh District, County Mayo, Ireland. Witnesses were Michael Jordan and Bridget Jennings.[3]

The 1901 Census of Ireland recorded Michael Noone, age 56, a landholder and a farmer, in Toocananagh, with wife Margaret, age 54, son Michael, age 22, daughter Mary, 17, and daughter Ellen, 15. All were born in County Mayo and were Roman Catholic.[4] Their house was classified as a third-class house, described as a two-room house with walls of brick, stone, or concrete, a roof of thatch or wood (probably; it was not slate, iron, or tiles), and two windows on the front of the house. There was one out-building on the property.[5]

In the 1911 Census of Ireland, Michael Noone (69) was living in Toocananagh, Mayo, Ireland, with his daughter Ellen (24) and her husband John Loftus (32).[2] Their house was classified as a third-class house, described as a two-room house with walls of brick, stone, or concrete, a roof of thatch or wood (probably; it was not slate, iron, or tiles), and two windows on the front of the house.[6] There were three outbuildings on the farm: a piggery, a fowl house, and a barn.[7]

Michael Noone died in Treenduff on 5 December 1919, reportedly aged 77.[8] Treenduff is or was considered part of the townland of Toocananagh.[9] John Loftus of Treenduff, presumably Michael's son-in-law, was present at his death and was the informant on Michael's death certificate.

Noone-6 and Noone-282 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same wife, some duplicate children.
