Biography

Susanna was born in 1745. She was baptised on 28 April 1745 at the church of St. Mary Magdalene, Launceston, Cornwall, England. Only her father's name John was recorded in the register.[1][2]

On 7 March 1779 Susannah Norcott married James Ruse in South Petherwin, Cornwall. His name was entered in the register as "James Roose", however he signed "James Ruse". Susannah also signed the register.[3][4][5]

They had two children baptised at South Petherwin, Cornwall:[4]

  • Elizabeth (1779−1779) was baptised 3 October 1779 but sadly was buried 24 October 1779.[6]
  • Richard (1780−1842) was baptised on 1 January 1781: "Richard son of James and Susanna Ruse".[7]

Her husband James was convicted at the Cornwall Assizes in 1782, of the crime of “burglariously breaking and entering the dwelling house of Thomas Olive and stealing thereout 2 silver watches, value 5 pounds.” On 29 June 1782 he was sentenced to death, reprieved to transportation for seven years.[4]

In 1783 James's father, Richard, undertook the support of his grandson Richard. Susannah's parish assistance was withdrawn, although recommenced at a later date. Susannah received four shillings a month to support their son, Richard.[4]

Susannah had another child in 1786, fathered by Robert Strong Junior. Susanna had her child Elizabeth baptised at the church at South Petherwin on 10 September 1786, and the register has the entry: "Elizabeth base born dr of Robert Strong Junr & Susannah Roose, wife of James Roose a convict on board one of his Majesty's".[4][8]

After the birth of Elizabeth, the entries in the overseer's account read "roose Susanna's boy and girl ... 6s.0d."[4]
