The Südfeld family were Orthodox Jews. Max’s parents were Orthodox. Max was reform Jewish but he married a Danish Protestant in France. His sisters Hedwig (Hedi/ Hedviga) (my great grandmother), and Ida (my great Auntie) also became reform Jews.
Simcha Miksa Südfeld was born in Pest, while Hedwig was born in Prague. Hedwig married a reform Jew from Trebič (a town with a large Jewish community) in Moravia, called Heinrich Tandler (my great x grandfather). One of their daughters was called Marta (my grandmother). Hermann Südfeld, Hedwig, and Heinrich Tandler all moved to Vienna. They basically had nothing to do with Max Nordau.
Südfeld was also written as Sidfeld, and Suedfeld.
It is possible that the Tandler family also had Sephardic roots, as my great x 3 grandfather was called Moises (which is a Spanish name). He was born in Jamnice in Northeast Moravia. He married Maria Tandeles (my great x 3 grandmother) from Trebič. One of their sons was called Herman (my great x 2 grandfather). Herman married Julie Salzer (my great x 2 grandmother). She also came from Trebič. Her parents were Wolf Salzer and Anna Singer, who were both from Trebič. They are my great x 3 grandparents.
Max Nordau’’s real name was Simcha Miksa Südfeld. He is my great x 2 uncle. He was Sephardic.
The Südfeld family were from Krotoszyn Poland. The name Südfeld means South Field, and was adopted because the Südfeld roots were from Southern Europe.
My 9 x great grandfather was Oser from Spain in 1586. What would become the Südfeld lineage stemmed from Oser.
His son (my 8 x great grandfather) was Jehuda Ben Oser, and he was born in Thessaloniki Central Macedonia Greece in 1640. His son (my 7 x great grandfather) was Rabbi Josef Ben Jehuda, and he was born in Thessaloniki Central Macedonia Greece. His son (my 6 x great grandfather) was Moshe Ben Josef, born 1686 in Poland. His son (my 5 x great grandfather) was Simcha Ben Moshe, born 1710. He became known as Simcha Südfeld. His son (my 4 x great grandfather) was Xoser Südfeld born in Poland in 1758. His son (my 3 x great grandfather) Samuel Südfeld born in Poland in 1811. He married Hinde Braun (my 3 x great grandmother). Their son was Hermann Südfeld (my 2 x great grandfather) born in Poland in 1835. He married Clara Behrend (my 2 x great grandmother). They had several children and one of them was Simcha Miksa Südfeld (AKA Max Nordau).
Simcha changed his name to Nordau because he idealized Northern Europe, even though he was Sephardic. He became estranged from the Südfeld family, so much so that I only found out that he was a relative a few years ago.
