Biography

Bjørn Oddsen Norheim was born before 1540 in Norheim gård #49, Etne, Hordaland, Norway, the son of Odd Tolleivson Norheim. He died after 1603 in Norheim gård #49, Etne, Hordaland, Norway. Bjørn Oddsson is mentioned in documents between 1563 and 1603. In 1591, Bjørn was sent as a representative from Etne to the coronation of King Christian IV in Oslo. He served as a lagrettemann and bailiff of Grindheim Church. Bjørn may also have been the Etne lensmann for a time. Bjørn and his co-heirs were sued in 1591 over a debt incurred by his deceased brother. Bjørn did not appear in court and the judgment went against him. In 1597, Bjørn last named in the tax rolls as living at Norheim, which he owned. That year he paid a "ship tax" of 12 mark tallow, 1 buckskin and 8 alb. Bjørn must have been unusually wealthy since his children owned vast properties in 1624.

Married to Lauertia Berteldatter Sundt Koch. Children:

  1. Tolleiv
  2. Karen / Kari
  3. Margrete (b. 1570, d. abt. 1643), to Aukland
  4. Anna (d. abt. 1621)

Notes

ii. Margrethe BJØRNSDATTER Norheim(776) (777) (767) was born about 1570 in Norheim gård #49, Etne, Hordaland, Norway. She died in 1643 in Augland gård #8, Hjelmeland, Rogaland, Norway. In 1624, Kari Lauritsdatter Galtung, the widow of Jakob Jørstad, declared an intention to live with Margrethe Bjørnsdatter in her old age. In return Kari offered to give Margrethe a quarter of all her chattels and real estate. It is unknown whether this transaction ever transpired.

Bjørn is recorded at Norheim, Etne, from 1563 to 1603. He was an extremely wealthy man; two of his children, Tolleiv and Kari, are explicitly mentioned in records as owning large properties. Bjørn was one of the representatives at the hailing of king Christian 4 in 1591.[1]
