Introduction

A brief introduction to the colonial history of Perquimans County North Carolina to clarify naming and subdivision of geographical areas 1664-1739. Albemarle County, established in 1664, and was named for George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle, one of the eight Lords Proprietors of the Province of Carolina. It consisted of about 1,600 square miles and contained what is now the northeastern portion of North Carolina. In 1670, Albemarle County was divided into four precincts: Shaftesbury (renamed Chowan), Berkeley (renamed Perquimans), Pasquotank, and Currituck. In 1722, Bertie Precinct was formed from part of Chowan and in 1729, parts of Bertie Precinct, Chowan Precinct, Currituck Precinct, and Pasquotank Precinct were combined to form Tyrrell Precinct. When Albemarle Precinct was abolished in 1739, Perquimans and the other precincts became separate counties of the royal colony of North Carolina. [1]

Biography

Henry Norman, born possibly about 1648 in either Maryland or England, first appears in records for Perquimans Precinct of Albemarle County about 1691. Henry and his wife Ann had two children based on available records [2]

  • Mary Norman born 26 Jul 1700
  • Henry Norman born 15 Dec 1701.

Based records for deed transactions [3] , Henry Norman owned land on the north side of Albemarle Sound and adjacent to lands of Major Thomas Harvey (Deputy Governor of North Carolina 1694-1699). It is likely that his land was located on the peninsula called Harvey's Neck in modern Perquimans County.

Some researchers indicate that Henry Norman died in 1708. This may be based on an English Probate record for a Henry Norman. However, records for deed transactions in Perquimans Precinct suggest that he died between 1716 and 1722.

The following records mention Henry Norman in deed transactions after 1681:

No. 67. John Bentley, Cooper—(son of Richard, of Perq Pre'ct, Cooper, Dec'd) sold 100a (part of a grt unto his father Richard Bentley, 15000a, Mar 29, 1680) unto Joyas (Josiah) Fendall, adj Cornelius Leary, & Henry Norman. Feb 4, 1691. Test’ John Harvey, John Philpotts, Alexander Lillington. [Indicates that Henry acquired his land before 1691, and likely before 1681 when these records begin.]
No. 175. Samuel Swann Esq, & Elizabeth his wife, to our son Samuel Swann, 100a bounded on the South by the Sound, on West by Henry Normans land, & on East by land of Cornelius Leary. Aug 28, 1701.
No. 187. Robert Fendall of Perq precinct, for £5 pd by Samuel Swann Esq of said precinct, do “Release 100a on North-side of Roanoak Sound,” in said Precinct, adj Lands of Henry Norman, & Cornelius Leary. April 14, 1702. Test’ Samuel Swann Jun'r, Francis Beasley.
No. 243. John Norcom, & Elizabeth his wife of Perq precinct, for a Sum of Money pd by Henry Warring of same, sold Land on Sound side, adj Henry Norman, & Mr Mins (Ming) called the “Gore” 122a. Jan 6, 1704/5. Test’ George Kinisle, Richard Leary
No. 251. Henry Warren, & Elizabeth his wife, for £10 s10 pd by James Minge, sold Land called the “Gore” 122a, adj Henry Norman, & James Minges own Land. Mar 27, 1705. Test’ Richard Leary, Jeremiah Banns.
No. 361. Thomas Blitchenden of Perq Pre'ct for £20 pd by Charles Denman, of afore’, Merchant—Convey to said Denman 100a called the “Gore” adj Henry Norman, James Minge, & the Sound side. April 10, 1716.
No. 105. Sept 7, 1722. John Williams of Perq, Planter—to Nicholas Crisp of Chowan, Gent—for £100, Sold 200a in Perq on Albemarle Sound, by the “Great Swamp,” adj Lands of Maj Thomas Harvey, & Mary Norman (Widow of Henry) part of 340a “Patent to said John Williams.” Nov 11, 1719. Test’ Thomas Parris, Will'm Badham. [This suggests that Henry's death must have occurred between 1716 and 1722. It also implies that Henry's first wife Ann died and he remarried; however, other records suggest that Ann survived her husband. Perhaps it was an error or perhaps the reference was to his daughter Mary Norman rather than to his wife.]
No. 133. Henry Norman, of Chowan, Planter—for £100 pd by John Crisp of same, Gent—assigned 200a on N. side of Albemarle Sound, “In Perq Per'ct,” adj Land formerly Capt Fendals, but now belonging to John Swann, son of Maj Samuel Swann. Jan 16, 1722. Test’ E. Moseley, Chris'er Heidlbery, Wm Coward. [This may be Henry Norman's son Henry born in 1701 who would have just come into his majority.]
No. 166. John Pettiver, of Perq, unto Thomas Blitchenden of same—60a adj Henry Norman dec'd, which was his home Plan’ at the head of “Spelmans Creek,” part of a Pattent to me 1720/21. Seal April 10, 1722. (Called “Gore Land.”) Test’ Jo Jessop, Jonathan Evens.

Marriage

Records for the birth of Henry's two children Mary and Henry list his wife's name as Ann. Some researchers indicate that her name was Ann Walker and that they were married in 1688 in Albemarle Precinct. [4][5]

Prior to original import, this record was last changed 13 JUL 2012.

Deed record No. 105 (Sept 7, 1722) cited above refers to Mary Norman (Widow of Henry). This suggests that Henry's first wife Ann died and that he remarried; however, other records suggest that Ann survived her husband. Perhaps it was an error or perhaps the reference was to his daughter Mary Norman rather than to his wife.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

Sir Henry Thomas Norman was Henry Thomas Norman Jr father, he was married to Anne Walker, the had a son, Henry Norman 3 who married Mary Spruill, daughter of Dr Godfrey Spruill. The Mary Norman the records refer to is Henry Norman 3 wife.

Cathie, that’s most likely what happened in this case. Thank you for your reply and clarification.

I just wanted to say that Henry’s wife may have been “Mary Ann” and therefore not a second wife Mary. Since the children were Henry and Mary most likely named after parents.

Nita,

I had the thought that the person who transcribed the original Deed Record 105 and added the parenthetical (widow of Henry) made a mistake. The Mary in the deed record would be his daughter Mary Norman.
