Letter to NARA from Mrs. J. W. Barnes, 22 Apr 1909: 2nd great-great-grandfather: John Norris came from England to this country before the Revolutionary War and settled in either Wake or Johnston counties NC, not far from Smithfield NC. The old family traditions say that John Norris was a Revolutionary soldier and fought on the side of independence through the whole war.

  • Alternate spouse:

Email to me (Sharon) from another Norris/Averyt researcher (Kay): My family source is a note found in the bible of my grandmother who died in 1965. The note was typed, and its author not specified, but I assume the information was provided by my grandmother [who was born in about 1870]. Per the note, which purported to be based on information provided by Elizabeth Norris, her mother Pherabe Avera's mother was a Powell--either Pherabe or Elizabeth, I can't recall which the note said. Pherabe and Elizabeth were sisters, one who married William Avera and the other who married John Norris, father of Nahor.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
