Biography

This profile is part of the Norris Name Study.

According to one family history, Thomas Norris was reportedly born in 1718.[1] However, in original court data for his father's account settlement, Thomas's mother indicates he was born on 23 August 1728.[2]

In his will dated 6 October 1781, Thomas Norris wrote, "I Thomas Norris of Jno," which indicates his father's name was John, not Thomas.[3]

Davis (1941 vol. 1:55) notes that he first married Ann _____ (possibly Heard) before 1756.[4]

Thomas died before 12 February 1782, when his will was entered into St. Mary's court for probate. His will named his second wife, Mary, and sons Philip, William, and Joseph. After Mary's decease, Thomas's sons would inherit his land equally: part of a tract called Wheatly's Content (±82 acres), another part of Wheatly's Content (±13 acres), and one tract or parcel of land called Norris's Purchase (±57 acres).[5] Witnesses to the will included Matthew and Margaret Heard, possibly relatives of Thomas's first wife, Ann.

Davis (1941 vol 1:55) notes that several daughters were documented in St. Andrew's Parish records: Mary Ann (born 1 November 1756), Mary (born 22 October 1759), Elizabeth (born 26 October 1768 to second wife), Rebecca (born 28/18 September 1771 to second wife), and Dorothy Ann (born 24 August 1773 to second wife).[6] All but Elizabeth were indexed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Genealogical Department in 1977.[7] Thomas's will makes no mention of daughters from either his first or second wife. Perhaps Ann's daughters were given their share of his estate when they married (or perhaps died young). And Mary Norris's will made provisions for her daughters.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Thomas Norris-4061 should be the son of a John Norris, not another Thomas Norris. In his will, Thomas Norris-4061 describes himself as "I Thomas Norris of Jno," which indicates he is the son of John Norris. That is most likely John Norris who married Ann Wheatley. Is anyone actively researching this line who would like to discuss changes to the parents of Thomas Norris-4061?
