Biography

John was born in Herkimer, New York in around 1803.

He married Mary "Polly" Read in Herkimer in 1822 and they had four children. Albert 1833-1878 William 1835-1906 Mary L 1837-1868 (married Philip Riley) John 1843-1916

Sometime before John's birth the family moved to Lyme, Jefferson County, NY.[1]

In 1865, Albert and Mary were not in the household at the time of the census.[2]

In 1870 the household included a Willie and Bernard Northrup - these were actually the children of Mary and her husband Philip Riley. Sadly Mary had died 2 years earlier, which is probably why the children were being raised by their grandparents. Interestingly, the household also contained a 24-year old domestic servant Eliza Graves.[3] The very next household on the census was Albert and Emma Northrop.

In 1880 John was living in Three Mile Bay, Lyme, Jefferson County New York with his wife Mary, his son William and his wife Eliza (aged 34!), and their son Fred. Also in the household were Will and Berney, now with the surname Riley.[4]

John passed away in 1892 in Three Mile Bay. Mary passed away in 1897.
