Biography

Mary Elizabeth Northrop was born in Peacham, Caledonia County, Vermont, on 18 April 1839.[1]

Miss Mary Northrop died on 27 March 1870 in Peacham, Caledonia County, Vermont, of dropsy at age 27. She was unmarried.[2]


Will

In her will[3] dated at Peacham 21 March 1870 at Peacham, Vermont, she named her brother John C. Northrop as her executor, and paid her debt of $36 to him for "board and attention while living with him since the death of my father." She desired that $60 be expended to procure tomb stones to be placed on her grave. She gave to her brother Joseph Northrop of California the sum of $250. To her sister Adeline Cook $35 for her to expend in purchasing a black silk dress for herself. To her niece Fanny May Goss she gave $25 to come into her possession when she arrived at age 18, and if she died before that then to go to her mother; to her she also gave one black silk sash. To her nephew Ashley Joseph Goss $25 when he became 21 years, and to his mother if he died beforehand. To her brother-in-law Albert Goss & to his wife Jane Goss $350.
After her debts and funeral expenses were paid, the rest of her estate was to be given half to each of her brothers John C. Northrop of Peacham and Joseph Northrop of California. To her brother Joseph in California also a feather bed &feathers for one pair of pillows, and four blankets.
Two blankets, a pair of sheets, a linen tablecloth, and two dresses to her brother Henry's wife. To her sister Mrs. Estabrooks of Danville she gave three dresses, a shawl, cloak a skirt, and some stockings.
To her sister Adeline two dresses, a shawl and a blanket. Her sister Jane was given two dresses, shoes, boots, the remainder of her stockings, bed linens, pilows, and a bedstead, a shawl and cloth to make a skirt, all of her handkerchiefs& night dresses, a silver thimble, two baskets two skirts, a black silk apron & three cotton ones, and a black silk dress.
To her brother John's youngest daughter Eva May a pair of cloth boots, cotton hose and chemises, some ear jewels and two pins.
To Elsie Jane Northrop she gave a green silk bonnet, a dress and a black hat.
To her brother Joseph two pair of (feetings? fretings?) one being some of her father's, and the other being some of her brother Frank's.
The witnesses to her will were Cynthia E. Goodenough, Clarissa Peak and John Varnum Jr.
