Needham Moses Northrop was born on 27 June 1825 in Berlin, Rensselaer, New York, most likely to David Anson Northrop and Clarissa UNKNOWN.
He married Jane Ann Launt on 2 January 1847 in Stephentown. They migrated to Yates County shortly thereafter, where they had six children together.
He worked as blacksmith before entering the service.
Military
Needham enlisted into the 8th Regiment of the New York Calvary on 18 September 1861 at Penn Yan, Yates, New York, and was mustered into Company A as a blacksmith and farrier in Rochester, New York on October 9th of the same year. He was wounded in battle and was discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability on 25 May 1862 at Poolesville, Maryland.
He reenlisted in Company A of the 8th Regiment of the New York Calvary on 2 January 1864 at Potter, New York to serve one year. He was mustered in at Canandaigua, Ontario, New York as Private three days later. In October of 1864, he became ill from typhoid fever and was taken to the military hospital in Sandy Hook, Maryland near Harper's Ferry, Virginia.
Death
Needham passed away on 16 October 1864 at the military hospital in Sandy Hook, Maryland due to complications of typhoid fever. He was buried in Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Washington, Maryland.
