Biography

Amanda Melvina Lucinda Nancy Caroline Norton was born in Alabama on May 19, 1860 [1]. She used the name "Melvina" throughout her life.

On the 1870 Census, Melvina was living in Haralson County, Georgia with Absalom Martin and his wife, Lucy Martin. Others in the household were Lucy's son, William Willingham, Lucy's sister, Sarah Cummings, and Sarah's two sons, John and Grant Cummings. [2]

She married James R. Brown on May 28, 1876 at home in Haralson County, Georgia. [3] [4]

On the 1880 Census, she was living in Haralson County, Georgia with her husband and two children. According to the census, she was a homemaker and could not read or write. [5]

On the 1900 Census, she was living in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia with her husband and nine children. According to the census, she could not read or write. The census also stated that she and her parents were born in Alabama. [6]

On the 1910 Census, she was living in Tallapoosa, Haralson County, Georgia with her husband, five children, and mother-in-law, Sarah Almeda "Sally" Brown. According to this census, she and her mother were born in Alabama, and her father was born in South Carolina. She could not read or write. [7]

On the 1920 Census, Melvina Norton Brown was living in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia. She was listed as a widow. She had six children and one grandchild living with her at the time. According to the census, she could not read or write. This census stated that Melvina and her father were born in Alabama, and her mother was born in South Carolina. [8]

On the 1930 Census, she was living in Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia in the household of her son, Joseph Medford Brown, and two grandchildren. According to the census, she was a widow, could not read or write, and was born in Alabama. Her father was also born in Alabama, and her mother was listed as being born in South Carolina. [9]

She passed away March 17, 1932[10] in Haralson County, Georgia. She was buried at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Felton, Haralson County, Georgia. [11]
