Research Notes

I have long believed John H. Norton was related to Henry Wilson Norton b. 1766, but he is not the man known as John Knox Norton born February 22, 1787 and died 1860 in Coffee County, Tennessee. From the sources I have listed you can see that John H. Norton died after the 1870 census in Texas. This means either John Knox Norton is the son of Henry Wilson Norton and John H. Norton is not his son but some other close relation as in Uncle or the man listed for years as John Knox Norton who died 1860 in Coffee County, Tennessee is not, nor has ever been the son of Henry Wilson Norton. All sources listing a middle initial for this John that I have seen has been H. not K. which leads me to believe his middle name is Henry. There are land records listed in Barbour and Henry Counties, Alabama for a John K. Norton but he is John Kennedy Norton born 1816 in South Carolina son of William Norton and Lucretia Harrelson not John Knox Norton. I do share DNA with the children of Henry Wilson Norton b. 1766. Note that the name Knox has not been given to any of the descendants of John H. Norton. On several records, John H. Norton initials have been listed as T. H. as the J. sometimes was misread as a T. in records when they were transcribed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Yes, I am aware of the site and the test, but this John Norton is not John Knox Norton. Please read Research Notes in the above biography. The test is linked to John Knox Norton only because the person that took the test believes this John is John Knox Norton which I have proven cannot be possible. There aren't any other descendants of Henry Wilson Norton listed on the site that have taken a DNA test. I have always believed this John is closely related to Henry Wilson Norton, whether he is his son or maybe nephew is yet to be proven. I share DNA with descendants of Henry Wilson Norton which means he is at least in the right grouping. The person that first listed this John as John Knox Norton did so because of a land record for J K Norton in Alabama during the same time as this John was residing in Alabama. She assumed the J K stood for John Knox when in fact it was the initial for John Kennedy Norton (South Carolina Norton's). I have found this John with the middle initial H. in a few records, I believe H. is for Henry. One of his grandsons was named John Henry Fletcher Norton.
