Biography

The parentage of Elizabeth (or Elisabeth) is uncertain if using online transcriptions of parish registers alone. However, there is enough convincing circumstantial evidence to allow me to believe that the profiles I have added as parents are correct. The evidence is as follows: 1) William and Elizabeth Brown had at least three children - Damaris, William and Elizabeth, all christened at High Halden. 2) Stephen Norton and Damaris Brown were married at Bethersden on 31 Dec. 1771. 3) They had at least seven children christened at Bethersden viz: William 1772, John 1775, Damaris 1777, Mary 1778/1779, Stephen 1780/1781, Daniel 1784, Joseph 1789, but no Elizabeth is recorded. 4) In the period between William, April 1772, and John, October 1775, there was an Elisabeth Norton christened on 13 April 1773 at High Halden, the daughter of Stephen and Elisabeth (not Stephen and Damaris). 5) The only marriage to a Stephen Norton in this locality at this period was that of Damaris Brown as in (2) above. My authority for this statement is the Mid-Kent Marriages Index. 6) Although there are a few other instances of the name Damaris being given to daughters in Bethersden, it is unusual enough for its use in the family under consideration to be considered relevant. Elizabeth's mother was born Damaris Brown, one of her sisters was born Damaris Norton, and she named a daughter Damaris Jarvis.

Taking all these points together, I think it is safe to say that Elizabeth's parents were Stephen Norton and Damaris (Brown).

Elizabeth was Richard Jarvis's first wife.Oliver-4952 17:22, 18 October 2017 (EDT)
