Biography

Julia was born in 1826. Birth records of her children state that she was born in Rhode Island. The death record of Hattie (d 11 Aug 1887) states Julia was born in Newport. ^[1]

She married Benjamin Bassett 12 Dec 1841.^[2] Benjamin passed away in 1872 in Philadelphia.

In the 1870 they are found in New Bedford, Ward 6 and her place of birth is listed as Rhode Island.^[3]

Julia passed away 8 Aug 1882 in New Bedford, Massachussetts with her death record listed as Julia H. N. Cranston, daughter of George and Sarah Norton of Newport, Rhode Island and also gives her place of birth as Newport, Rhode Island.^[4]

Research Notes

Is there a second marriage? 1874 marriage of a Julia H Bassett to a John Cranston where Julia has parents it appears erroneously listed as William and Sarah Bassett.

The entry for son Charles Bassett at his Wikipedia page states that his parents separated in Charlie's late teens and Charlie went with his Dad to live in Philadelphia but this is without documentation and appears to be controverted by Census records.
