George Stillman Norton was born in 1827, in Vermont a son of Jeremiah Norton and Amanda (Seaver) Norton. On July 20, 1851 in Glover, Vermont, George married Sarah Miles, a daughter of Moral Miles and Mary (Jenness) Miles. Sometime before 1857, they moved to Minnesota. They moved around, living in Union Prairie, Orion, and Moscow, before finally settling down in Faribault, raising two sons and one daughter.
On Feb 16, 1865, George enlisted at Rochester, in the U.S. Army, 1st Regt. Of Minnesota, Heavy Artillery, Company M. He was eventually promoted to sergeant, before being mustered out on Sept. 27, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee.
