Biography

John Edward Nottingham was christened December 24, 1860 in Aldbrough, Yorkshire, England —son of Edward Sargent Nottingham and Anna /Hanna Elizabeth Hodge Nottingham. Edward is 28, (should be 30) Anna is 23, George Sargent is 2, and John is 3 mo..so the 1861 England census was taken around end of March or early April. The 1871 England Census, taken at Goxhill Parish, Glanford Brigg District, in Lincolnshire finds Edward 41, Anna 34, George S. 12, Dinah M. 7, Charles (is Philip Charles) 4, Anne E. 2, John 10. The April 15, 1891 Census of Ontario, East York shows John as a single man working as a fam laborer, age 26 (born 1865, should be 1860) born in England as well as both parents, his religion as Methodist. There are a few John Nottinghams listed in Marriage Registrations for York, England in 1890–one possibility is that John married in 1890 to Margaret who could possibly have bire him son, Donald, who was born 1895 in Ontario, Canada..but will have to research more. (It would explain the mother of Donald who was clearly alive when John married Catherine. Ontario Marriages —June 14, 1899 —shows John Nottingham 35 born England (although he should be 38 1/2) marrying Catherine Christie Fergusson age 29 (born England, although she should be 30 1/2) marrying in Reach Ontario, Canada. Both had been living in Reach at the time, a rural farming community. Parents are listed as Edward Nottingham and Anna Hodge Nottingham, both born England and John +Eliza Fergusson, both born Scotland. John is a farmer for the rest of his life in the Reach area of Ontario. The 1901 Canada Census at Reach Ontario, taken April 16 shows John’s birhdate as December 28, 1863-age 37 (should be christened Dec 24, 1860, making him 40); Katie (as she now calls herself—has birthdate Nov 30, 1869 or 68? hard to read—if 1868, she’d be 32, but shows age 31; it correctly says she immigrated to Canada in 1872; John has a son Fergus Daniel born in Quebec (which is found to be wrong, was born in Ontario—September 12, 1895. They have a daughter Marie /Maria or (Annie Maria) born February 21 or 28, 1900 (it says 1890 here but should be 1900 , she was born in Ontario and was clearly 1 yr old.) Three more children were born in the following 10 years..Alice Erie born March 2, 1902, Allan Franklin (known as Frank) born October 1, 1904 and Robert Stanley born August 26, 1906, all in Reach Ontario. Wife Katie died of a fallopian tube infection on March 2, 1911, which appears to be on Alice’s 9th birthday. When John was 50 yrs old, Katie died at 42 1/2 although the record says she was 40. He remarried about 1915 and has a 5 yr old son, Roy by new wife Emily (43), by the 1921 Census. Marie is then 21, Alice is 19, Franklin is 16+ Stanley is 14, and by this time, John is correctly shown as 62yrs old. John died Dec 31, 1943, at Mariposa, Victoria, Durham County, Ontario, and was buried Jan 3, 1944 at Pinegrove Cemetery at Port Perry, Ontario Canada.
