Biography

Mary Nowakowska was born in August 1884. It is thought that she was born in Pennsylvania, United States to parents Anthony Nowakowski and Helen (Unknown) Nowakowski.

At some point, Mary's family moved from Pennsylvania to Camden, New Jersey. Her mother Helen bought a house at 1404 South 10th Street for $1250.[1] There she lived with her parents, her two brothers August and Anthony, and her sister Lottie.

Mary Nowakowska and Vincent Szczepanski married in New Jersey in 1902, likely at St. Joseph's Church.[2] With their new marriage, Mary's parents Anthony and Helen gave the young couple the family property at 1404 South 10th Street in Camden, New Jersey, which was right around the corner from the Polish Catholic congregation they belonged to.[3][4] Her parents and siblings moved around the corner to a home on Atlantic Ave that was within walking distance.[5]

Together they had seven children, one boy and six girls. From oldest to youngest they are:

  1. Joseph Szczepanski
  2. Margaret N. (Szczepanska) Richards
  3. Helen (Szczepanska) Szwartz
  4. Cecilia V. (Szczepanska) Zakerowski
  5. Mary (Szczepanska) Wisniewski
  6. Irene T. (Szczepanska) Forsyth
  7. Josephine (Szczepanska) Jusiak

Their daughter Margaret died at the young age of 23 from cancer in the area of her throat, and Vincent and Mary raised her young son Clarence Richards in her absence.[6][7][8][9]

She passed away in Mount Holly, Burlington, New Jersey on 27 July 1964 at the age of 79, and at that time was survived by five daughters, 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.[10] She is buried alongside her husband Vincent Szczepanski in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Chews Landing, Camden, New Jersey.[10]
