Biography

This profile is part of the Nowell Name Study.

Leonard was born in 1685. He was baptised at Clitheroe, Lancashire on 11 October 1685.[1]

Research Notes

Leonard may be the Leonard Nowell buried on 8 September 1720 at Clitheroe, Lancashire.[2][3] There were clearly two Leonard Nowells living in close proximity. The first, shown in this profile was born probably in a village called Worston part of the chapelry of Clitheroe. The second was born/baptised in 1674 the son of another leonard Nowell (born abt 1638) This last Leonard was the Usher of Whalley Grammar School and his son baptised at Urswick Lancashire became headmaster of Clitheroe Grammar School. There are very few leonards in the records for the Nowell name in Lancashire but it is more than likely that all three were in some way related

The death date must almost certainly be after 1720. The 1720 burial of a Leonard Nowell must refer to the leonard Nowell born 1674 son of another leonard Nowell born around 1638. The will of the younger Leonard names his wife as Isabella and this must be the Isabella Petty who married a Leonard Nowell at Urswick around 1700. The will shows that Isabella was still alive at the time of Leonards death. Both father and son were associated with the Clitheroe Grammar School and are mentioned in the history of that school. The Leonard that this profile refers to was married to an Ann.

Although there is a recorded burial for a Leonard Nowell at Clitheroe in 1763 I have not been able to attribute it to one of the two younger Leonards (though it is almost certainly one of them)
