When David Allen Nowlan was born in 1849 in Jackson, West Virginia, his father, Sabias, was 22 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 13. He married Sara M. Boone and they had nine children together. He also had one child with Nannie Grant Coulter. He had 12 brothers and five sisters.
