"HISTORY OF VIRGINIA" From the DAR office, Washington, DC, page 404:
James Nowlan who was a native of Ireland, who was a zealous communicant of the Catholic Church and who lost his material possessions in Ireland through his participation in one of the numerous religious wars in that volatile island. In order to defray the expenses of his passage to America, he indentured himself for a prescribed period to the captain of the vessel which brought him to Virginia about the year 1700. In this colony, he was reindentured to a planter named Bryan Ward, of Pittsylvania Co. In the course of time, this sterling ancestor changed the spelling of his surname from the original Nowlan to the present form of Nowlin. He married Catherine, a daughter of Bryan Ward, above mentioned, and they became the parents of several children, one of whom, James [sic] in turn grew to manhood, married and reared children, including a son to whom was given the name of Abraham. This Abraham Nowlin married Mildred Watkins, and their son, Captain Bryan Watkins Nowlin, the eldest in a family of eight children, maried Mary Spencer, the children of this union being as here designated: Virginia C. (Mrs. John P. Hughes), Marie E. (who became the wife of Captain S. H. Overton), John H., Julia, (died in infancy), Bryan Ward (died in infancy, and William C. (married to Virginia Watkins.

I added a link to the will of James Nowling. He does clearly call John and Stephen "her sons" when naming his wife wife Sarah and these two his executors.
