Biography

Carl G. Null was super intendant of the Security Building, the Charleston National Bank Building, and the Dominion Building. He was killed in an explosion at the Security Building on 24 Apr 1937. Workmen from the gas company had been changing a meter in in the furnace room just before the explosion occurred. Carl had turned the gas on, then left to get a torch with which to light the furnace. He was gone for a couple of minutes; and, when he returned with the torch, the gas exploded. He was killed and one other man was injured. The two furnace doors were torn apart by the blast. Carl was hit in the face by one of the doors; and, the door handle caught in his overalls. He was hanging unconscious on the door when others rushed to his aid.

The explosion was heard in the neighboring store and office buildings and a large crowd quickly gathered as the gas company crew, blackened by soot, carried the injured men to the sidewalk and called an ambulance. Fire Chief J. Louis McLane, beating the ambulance to the scene, took Null in his car to a hospital, where he died about 3:30 pm.

Null was a member of the Sixth Street M.E. Church, Charleston Lodge No. 153, A.F. and A.M., John W. Morris Consistory, Scottish Rite bodies, Beni Kedem shrine, and Glendale Lodge No. 170, Knights of Pythias. He was buried in Sunset Memorial Park. [1]
