James was born around 1770, the son of Rose "Mulatto Rose," an enslaved person and Moses Nunez. He appears to have lived in the Savannah, Georgia area most of his life. He married Lucy Anderson and they had at least two children.
One account states that James' wife was a free white woman, and that the two "lived together as husband wife. James Nunez was an American, his father was a Portugese (another name for Jew) he passed as a white man, witness has frequently seen him writing and acting as a clerk in the counting room of Edward Telfair of Savannah." [1]
There is a Savannah, Georgia court record stating that James Nunes was summoned to appear regarding a debt of $22.76 to a John Glass, in 1802.[2]
