William John Lane was born in 1858 in St George in the East, Middlesex, England to John Lane and Mary Symonds. His birth was registered in St George in the East in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Symonds.[1]
William John Lane, son of John & Mary, was christened on 7 Aug 1859 in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire.[2]
William's parents were not actually married, though they had two other sons and lived together as husband and wife at the time of the 1861 census.
In 1861 Wm Lane (age 2, Scholar) lived at Upper Thomas Street in St Benet, London with his father John (33, Porter), mother Mary (28), and two brothers: Fred (6, Scholar) and Thos Jno (4, Scholar), as well as two boarders: John Watts (22, Porter) and John Judge (23, Porter).[3]
William's parents most likely separated before 1867, though it's also possible that his father passed away.
William's mother Mary Symonds married Charles Nunn in 1867. William used his stepfather's surname on the 1871 census.
In 1871 William John Nunn (age 12, Laborer) lived in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire with his stepfather Charles (30, Laborer), mother Mary (39), and four siblings: Fredrick (16, Laborer), Thomas James (14, Office Boy), Maria Ellen (3), and Ernest G (1).[4]
William John Lane married Clara Priscilla Duce in 1880. The marriage was registered in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire in the third quarter of the year.[5]

In 1881 William Lane (age 22, Railway Shunter Pointsman) lived in Grantchester with his wife Clara Priscilla (19) and daughter Dora Lane Duce (0).[6]
In 1891 William Lane (age 32, Railway Shunter) lived at Meadow Road in Carlton, Nottinghamshire with his wife Clara (30) and four children: Dora (10, Scholar), George (9, Scholar), William (4, Scholar), and Maria (3).[7]
In 1901 William Lane (age 42, Railway Guard) lived in Carlton with his wife Clara (40) and five children: Dora (20, Lace Pattern Hand), George (19, Bookkeeper), William (14, Assistant Timekeeper), Maria (13, Errand Girl), and Nellie (4).[8]
In 1911 William John Lane (age 51, Goods Guard Great Northern Rlwy) lived in Carlton with his wife Clara Phiscilla (50) and two daughters: Maria (23, Overbroker Lace Manufacture) and Ellen Mary (14, Apprentice Millining).[9]
