Biography

William was born about 1856.

At age 4, he was recorded in the 1861 England census as the son of John Nuttal and Mary. There were several children listed in the household.

The [1] article lists William as working some years in the mines after leaving school, and then went to Tyneside.

Around 7 November 1878, at St Mary’s Church in the Parish of Jarrow, Heworth, Durham, England, he married Jane Mary Raine (1859-1954). He was 22 years old. The wedding was recalled by the New Zealand Herald in William’s goldern anniversary story, although it suggests the wedding was in Tyneside.

William and Jane left England in 1878 and arrived at Lyttelton on 26 Feb 1879 on the ship Boyne. His father remained back in England and died shortly afterwards in May 1879.

William joined the locomotive department of the railway service and was stationed at Springfield, Methven, Oxford, Christchurch, and also at Wanganui from 1888. At various times he was a fireman on a stream locomotive.

In 1917 he retired on superannuation and carried on farming at Ruawaro near Huntly in the Waikato with his family.

The New Zealand Herald wrote an article to celebrate his Goldern Anniversary in 7 Nov 1928, p14 [2]. At the time of his golden wedding anniversary he had around 60 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

William died 5 Jan 1938 in Rauwaro, Huntly, Waikato, New Zealand (BDM: 1938/15557) at the age of 81 years. His obituary was on p12 of the 6 Jan 1938 New Zealand Herald.

"Mr. WILLIAM NUTTALL , who was formerly in charge of the hydraulic machinery, was born in 1857, and is a native of Blyth, England. After receiving an elementary education, he began his industrial life in the boiler-maker's shop of Sir Charles Mark Palmers at Jarrow-on-Tyne. Mr. Nuttall came to New Zealand in 1878, and found employment with the Spring Coal Company He was appointed to take charge of the Government cranes at Greymouth in 1890." [3]
