Biography

George Matthew Nutting was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in 1898, the son of Henry and Julia (Costello) Nutting.[1] He grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, the eldest of 3 children. (Another sibling apparently died young.)[2] His father worked as an insurance agent.

At the time of the World War I draft enlistment, he worked as a traffic clerk at the Boston Army Supply Base. He was described as tall, with a slender build, with brown eyes and black hair.[3] He served in the Naval Reserve Force during World War I, enlisting on March 25, 1917. He was discharged April 16, 1921.[4]

He married Katherine Eleanor Lawler. They resided in Quincy and later Winthrop, where they raised twin daughters, Sheila and Nancy. George worked as an accountant for an advertising agency.[5] At the time of the 1940 census, George was an advertising salesman and Katherine worked as a receptionist at an employment agency.[6]

George died in 1958 at the Veterans Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. His death notice states that he is buried at the Holyhood Cemetery,[7] which is located in Brookline, Massachusetts, but he is not listed among the burials on the cemetery's website.
