Biography

Colin O'Donoghue was born on January 26, 1981 to Con and Mary O'Donoghue. He was born and raised in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. He attended local schools and later The Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. At age 17, Colin went to Paris for a month to learn French.[1]

Career

Most of Colin's early career was split between theatre and television work in Ireland and the UK. In 2003, he won the Irish Film and Television Award for "Best New Talent" for his role as Norman in "Home For Christmas".[2]

He appeared as Duke Philip of Bavaria in an episode of season 3 of The Tudors. He made his Hollywood film debut alongside Anthony Hopkins in the 2011 film The Rite.[3]

In 2012, Colin was cast as Captain Hook/Killian Jones in the second season of the ABC series Once Upon a Time.[4]

The song "The Words" by Christina Perri is dedicated to Colin's character of Captain Hook.[5]

Music

Colin was a part of the five-piece Irish band, "The Enemies", which was form in 2003 by Colin and a close friend, Ronan McQuillan. The Enemies released their self-titled debut EP on 7 March 2011 prior to their self-funded first album on track. He played guitar and sang backing vocals.[6]

Although the band was unsigned, it was commissioned by General Motors to record tracks for their "Chevy route 66" online campaign. The band worked on the music for Coca-Cola's "5BY20" project. Their debut album Sounds Big on the Radio was to be released in March 2013 but had to be scheduled for 2014.[7]

In May, Colin announced he was leaving the band due to the filming schedule of Once Upon a Time.[8]

Personal

Colin and his wife, Helen, have a son.[9]

Once Upon a Time: Killian "Captain Hook" Jones

Killian "Captain Hook" Jones
Portrayed by Colin O'Donoghue

In the Enchanted Forest, Killian and Liam, his brother, were abandoned by their father Brennan Jones. They began to work for a King in his royal navy. However, after the death of his brother in Neverland on a quest for the king to retrieve dreamshade, Killian rebelled and became a pirate. He rechristens the ship Jewel of the Realm to the Jolly Roger.[10]

Sometime later, he is revealed to have been the one to seduce Rumplestiltskin's, who is very much human at this time, wife away from him and their child, Baelfire. Jones taunts Rumplestiltskin for his cowardice which results in Rumplestiltskin seeking out to become the Dark One. When Rumplestiltskin returns to face Jones, he loses his hand to the "crocodile" and thus becomes known as Captain Hook.[11]

Hook returns to Neverland and shortly after his arrival, gives shelter to Baelfire who is on the run from Peter Pan. They form a friendship until Baelfire learns that Hook is the reason why his mother left. In response to Baelfire saying he is no better than his father, the man Hook wants to kill, Hook hands him over to the Lost Boys who serve Peter Pan.[12]

Hook has been involved in many subplots which involve killing Cora, The Evil Queen's mother; stopping Snow White and Emma from getting back to the Enchanted Forest, and many others.[13]

He has found true love in the form of Emma Swan. Fearing that she will think the worst of him, he does whatever he can to redeem himself for past actions (such as betraying Ariel to get his ship back). He sacrifices himself in the mid-point of season 5 to protect those that he loves against the Dark Ones.[14]
