Mary Elizabeth (O'Kelley) "Jackson" Walker was born on October 1, 1856, in Barry County, Missouri.
My grandmother (Mary's granddaughter) told me the following information, told to her by Mary herself. I have found other descendants with the same information passed down their lines as well.
Mary's mother, Caroline Jackson, married a Mr. O'Kelley (we no longer know his name) probably in either Tennessee or Missouri. They had Mary. Then Mary's father passed away (In Missouri?) when Mary was an infant. Her father's first name is unknown, but through DNA matches I think we found the right O'Kelley line...maybe someday we can find the right person!
Mary's mother, Caroline (Jackson) O'Kelley then got married again, to a Mr. Clagston (we no longer know his name either). Mary has 2 half siblings (Anne and a boy whose name we don't know) through this union.
By this time they were living in Illinois and Mary's mother, Caroline, got really sick and they packed up everything and headed for Missouri to Caroline's parent's house, Hugh and Hulda (Wilson) Jackson. Caroline passed away shortly after getting back to Missouri. Mr Clagston left Mary with her maternal grandparents, the Jacksons, and took his 2 children (Anne and the boy) and head for his parents place in Texas. After this Mary used the surname of 'Jackson' (like on her marriage record) but it was never a legal last name. Most of the documents have her birth name of O'Kelley though.
Later on, Ann did get a hold of Mary. Ann said that her father left her with her paternal grandparents and took off with his son (Anne's brother), never to be seen again. Ann also told Mary that her father had told her that not only had her mother, Caroline, passed away back in Missouri but that Mary had died as well. But after the death of Ann's grandparents (she was all alone) she was trying to track down anyone who might be a relative of her mother Caroline (ie the Jacksons), and found Mary again!
I guess Mary was betrothed to a gentlemen who went off to find work and a place for them to live but did not return for many many years. In the meantime her grandparents, the Jacksons, convinced her to marry the gentleman next door, David Walker. Mary (as Mary Jackson) and David got married on June 12, 1874, in McDowell, Missouri and they had 12 kids together. They lived in McDowell, Barry County, Missouri until sometime between 1910 - 1918 and then they moved to Yakima County, Washington.
She died on July 14, 1944, in Sunnyside, Yakima, Washington, at the age of 87, and was buried there.
