Biography

Patrick O'Leary was born in County Kerry, Ireland.[1] He was the husband of Catherine (Hannigan) O'Leary, whose cow allegedly started the Great Chicago Fire in the family's barn behind 137 DeKoven Street. They married in Cork about 1845, and immigrated to the United States.[2] While he was living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the Union army;[3] his date of enlistment was 28 September 1861.[4] After the war, he moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[5]He was a private in Company F, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry.[6] He enlisted on 28 September 1861.[7] After the war, he moved to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[8]

Patrick dropped dead in front of 5132 Halsted Street, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on 15 September 1894.[9] The cause of death was thought to be heart disease.[10] His funeral services were held at the Church of the Visitation, and high mass was celebrated by Father McGuire.[11] He was buried in Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery.[12][13]

I notice that the source materials include the federal census of 1870 and 1880, but not 1860. The census of 1860 shows that Patrick O'Leary, wife Kate, children Mary age 3, and Cornelius age 3/12 in the 10th Ward of CHICAGO. They did NOT live in Harrisburg, PA and move to Chicago after the Civil War. (There is a Patrick O'Leary on the 1860 census in Harrisburg with wife Mary -- not the correct person. This is a common name.) This information appears to have come from Patrick O'Leary's obituary in the Chicago Tribune, but the newspapers also continued to perpetuate the myth of the cow starting the fire! Where did they get the information that he married Catherine in Cork around 1845 and that he was from Kerry? Where did you get the information about Catherine's maiden name? I have also seen it as Donegan.
