James O’Brien was a blacksmith in the firm of O’Brien and Son (with his father from 1852-1887. He was a Scot Act Inspector for a number of years, a member of the Legislative Assembly 1892-1903 as a Liberal, connected with the School Board for 30 yrs. He was Captain in the Volunteers during the Fenian War and went to Saint John with his company to form a body guard for the Prince of Wales - Albert Edward on his visit in 1860.
