Ellen O'Brien was born about 1850 in Ireland to Stephen O'Brien and Sarah Hasty.[1]

In 1846, Ellen and her mother emigrated from County Clare to New Brunswick. They traveled on the Galway ship Chieftain which arrived in St. John, New Brunswick, on August 1.[2] It is unconfirmed if Stephen also made this trip or what happened to him, but it is believed he died on the journey over.[3] The two eventually came to Maine, where Ellen's mother remarried to Michael Cook.

Around 1865, Ellen married Patrick Fahey. They had 12 children and lived in Lewiston, Maine.[1][4]
