Biography

Ireland Native
Brendan O'Carroll was born in Ireland.

Brendan O'Carroll (b.17th September 1955) is an Irish actor, comedian, director, producer and writer, best known for portraying foul-mouthed matriarch Agnes Brown on stage and in the BBC and RTÉ television sitcom Mrs. Brown's Boys.

Brendan D., son of Gerard and Maureen (née McHugh) O'Carroll, was born on the 17th September 1955 in Finglas, County Dublin.[1][2]

O'Carroll left school at 12 and worked as a waiter. He went on to run his own bar, before venturing into comedy. He began performing small comedy gigs, eventually getting a reputation as an original and outrageous funnyman. [3]

O'Carroll's comedy career came to national attention with his first appearance on The Late Late Show.[3]

Brendan O'Carroll married on the 18th July 1975; he and his wife had four children. They divorced in 1999.[2]

O'Carroll wrote the radio show Mrs Browne’s Boys, creating Agnes Browne as the central character.[3] When the actress due to play Mrs Browne did not turn up, O'Carroll took on the role himself.[4] He went on to write a trilogy of novels about Mrs Browne The Mammy (1994), The Chisellers (1995) and The Granny (1996).[3]

In 1999, The Mammy was adapted into Agnes Browne, directed by and starring Angelica Huston.[5]

O'Carroll wrote a series of five plays starring himself as Agnes Browne.

Brendan O'Carroll married Jennifer Gibney on the 1st August 2005.[2]

A BBC producer who had seen O'Carroll's plays felt there was television potential. The plays were then adapted into the television sitcom Mrs. Brown's Boys,[3] starring Brendan O'Carroll as Mrs Brown and known for featuring mainly his family and friends in its cast.[4] Mrs. Brown's Boys D'Movie was released on the 25th June 2014.[6]
