Biography

Maurice was the son of Morgan O'Connell and Catherine O'Mullane.[1]

At the age of 12 Maurice and his brother Daniel were sent to Harrington's School in Cork.[2] A year later they were sent to Liege but were refused admission because Daniel was too old.[2] They were admitted at St. Omer in 1791 before moving to Douai College in 1792.[2][3] By January 1793 relations between England and France had deteriorated to such an extent that he and his brother Daniel were forced to travel to London.[3]

He became a Lieutenant in Count Walsh de Serrant's Regiment and died on active service in San Domingo in December 1797.[1][4]

The nomenclature varies, but it seems that he may have perished in the French colony Saint-Domingue (Haiti) as part of the Catholic Irish Brigade. For info on the latter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Irish_Brigade_(1794%E2%80%931798)
