Biography

John was born in 1778.

John O'Connell married Elizabeth Coppinger on 4th February 1806 at Barry's Court.[1] She was the daughter of William Coppinger, Esquire of Ballyvolane and Barry's Court.[2]

John O'Connell lived a life filled with fighting duels and waiting for large inheritances to carry his lifestyle. His marriage to Elizabeth Coppinger was expected to bring a large inheritance but it did not materialize as expected.

He became disfigured by a pistol shot to his face and he remained at Grenagh until the famines of 1846.[3]

The children of John O'Connell and Elizabeth Coppinger were:

  1. Morgan-John O'Connell, M.P. for Kerry.
  2. John O'Connell
  3. Maurice
  4. Jane O'Connell, married to Charles O'Donoghue of Glyns, county Kerry. Secondly married, McCarthy O'Leary, Esquire
  5. Catherine Mary O'Connell, youngest child, married Samuel Vines, Consul of Para, Brazil and British Consul in South America and the Azores[4]

Grena (or Grenagh House) became the seat of John O’Connell, son of Morgan O'Connell, in 1837.

He passed away on 9th September 1853 at Dinan in France.[5] He was living with French loyalist friends as he lost his land and inheritances in the famine of 1846.[3]

Research Notes

John and Elizabeth had several children before 1812 that were either still-born or died as babies.[3] These included Maurice who was born on 26th May 1810 at Bath in England.[6][7]
