Edward was born in 1889. He is the son of James O'Connell and Mary Ford. [1]
Edward, 24 yrs & 6 months, labourer born at North Melbourne, enlisted with the A.I.F., Light Horse Brigade Training 3, on 21 September 1914. [2] Next of kin, Mrs Mary O'Connell, 155 Park St, South Melbourne. Service numbers 5013/5141. Described as 5'6", 150 lbs, dark complexion, blue eyes & dark hair, Roman Catholic. He served as a Driver with the 14th Company, Australian Army Service Corps and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A51 Chilka on 2 February 1915. Edward had a troubled stint in the Army, incurring several discipline issues, including several for drunkeness. He also was struck down with pneumonia in France in 1917. Returned to Australia 14 December 1918. He was discharged on 30 March 1919.
On 25 August 1920 Edward signed for his War Gratuity Bond for 2116.2.0d at the South Melbourne Post Office.
In 1937 his siblings brought forward a case at the Victorian Supreme Court to presume the death of Edward who had been missing and not heard from since 1920.
Research Note
There is a record for an Edward Patrick O'Connell, aged 38, who died from heart failure due to alcoholism in Parramatta, New South Wales in 1925. Place of birth is Ballarat but that is not confirmed. [3]
